Multibrand truck platooning test tracks are planned in April 2020 in the ENSEMBLE project (EU). The road operators are not full partners in this project, but ETPC and IRU are supporting. Tests are reported in the UK by DAF and DHL (Catapult system). A risk rated strategic road network mapping was set up. Volvo reported trials in Sweden (Sweden4platooning), using a remote control, and a trial (VERA) near Berlin with a cloud based management center. In the US, a freightliner (Daimler) and Peloton Technology will start a commercial use of platooning in 2019 with a cloud connection and direct radio contact. Fuel economy of 4.5% for the front truck and 10% for the rear truck was assessed in previous tests.
With the requirements on trucks (brakes on all axles), platoons of trucks are safe.
Some questions are expressed about the real gain in fuel saving in platooning, knowing that in practice many trucks do not respect the minimum distances.
The relevant business cases for road operators is discussed. There is a need for an investment program on digital infrastructure. The cyber security should be ensured. A proper environment is required for V2V communication. V2I communication is also required in some circumstances. In case of emergency, the road manager should be able to dissolve the platoon.
No specific driving licence should be required for platooning, but some training.
